In W H Auden's poem "In memory of W B Yeats", he describes how "the brokers are roaring like beasts on the floor of the Bourse".
Well they're not doing that today! French TV tonight showed scenes from the trading rooms
where there's a trader singing "C'est la chute finale" - "It is the final collapse",
to the tune of the international communist anthem, the Internationale
("C'est la lutte finale" - It is the final combat).
Black humour or accurate prediction? Only time will tell!
At times like these, the words of the Communist Manifesto come to mind:
"All that is solid melts into air, all that is holy is profaned, and man is at last compelled to face with sober senses, his real conditions of life, and his relations with his kind."
